Vlys & Gandey present ‘Hero’ [Interview]

13 August 2014

When an EP like this drops in our inbox, we get very excited. Not only is the lead on the release a complete dinger but the remix package is short and sweet.

Frenchman Darlyn Vlys has been a firm favourite since ‘Floor 122’ on Avotre. His powerful, atmospheric tech house blend is quite simply irresistible. His latest piece is a two track collaboration with another connoisseur Thomas Gandey, someone who’s featured on WWD previously under his Cagedababy moniker.

We caught up with the boys recently to get the lowdown on the EP and other recent exploits. Check it!

Sincopat 24 – Darlyn Vyls featuring Thomas Gandey – Hero EP – Out 11th August 2014

First off, thanks for taking the time to answer a few questions, we love the new EP!

Thomas –   Thanks guys. Glad you like the EP, we’re really happy with its great to be working with Sincopat a label we both admire.

Can you give us an insight into the production process?

Darlyn –   Usually, I always have an idea for a track in mind before I start producing. For our Sincopat EP, I first created some super dirty synth sounds on my Prophet 8 and then built the groove on top,  and after a long development process the basic track was ready to send to Thomas to add vocals, he loved the tracks and got inspired quickly and sent the vocal back which we then built into the track and built the hooks around them. I really love his contribution….

Was it a long distance collaboration or intimate studio time?

Darlyn –   It was a ‘long intimate distance collaboration’, mainly over the internet and Skype, it seems to be the future these days on a lot of productions and that way you are able to work quickly and get instant replies rather than wait for diaries to synch, it’s easy to move files fast, we live in different countries but always close to hand when we are online…

Where did you guys first meet?

Darlyn & Thomas – We met at the Sincopat party on Sonar week at Barcelona this year where we were both playing, it was a great party, brilliant atmosphere which i finished by pouring a sack of confetti all over the audience.

The remix pack is also very strong with two big names in Yousef and Stefano Ritteri. What do you like about their interpretations of the tracks?

Thomas – The Ritteri mix is my favourite and has been a stable in my sets over the last month, super groovy and love how he’s used the vocals with the deep driving tech beat, great interpretation. The Yousef mix has a great techno syncopated feel to it, but it’s very unusual,   I played it out in Berlin and the crowd went crazy, we are good friends so it’s great to have him do a remix on a record.

Tell us, how has the reaction been to the tracks live?

Thomas – The first time i played the original mixes was on my last tour in Australia, in S.A.S.H Sydney I built up the set for two hours before playing Hero and then into Don’t Do I and the place went crazy, a few people asks dmd if it was the new Maceo Plex Record. We have a very unique and new sound with this record, very on point.

Lastly, where can we catch you guys in the coming months? And can we look forward to more new music?

Thomas – I am in Berlin for most of August performing and producing, my next show is Suicide Circus in Berlin with the Off recordings crew then at the end of the month in Jersey Live festival where i will be playing live.

Yes we have lots more music finished and waiting to go..!

Darlyn – I will be performing in Germany & Luxembourg and locking down a tour in India.
