Gaspard de la Montagne, you might not know the name now, but you should. I put my hand up to review his latest EP ‘Stallion’ after repeatedly listening to his 2013 offering ‘Pole’ , a fantastic atmospheric EP , with a production which exudes ambience within the confines of its techno/bass structure.

I was looking forward to hearing how De La Montagne had progressed with ‘Stallion’ and wasn’t disappointed by his effort. The opener on the record is also called ‘Stallion’ a nicely textured track that builds nicely, incorporating apt drum kicks, keys and simmering base. The track is atmospheric and chilled, almost trance like in the way it seduces. By the fourth minute De La Montagne brings all the parts together, with a noticeable increase in bass, bringing a totality to the track.  The track’s tranquil nature offers an escape into the idyllic halcyon that electronic music can sometimes provide. Check it out.

The second track on the EP is called ‘Steam’, this track contrasts with ‘Stallion’ as it brings a lot more of an aggressive exuberant energy. A base tinged track that will definitely gain some traction on the dance floor. It’s a darker offering quiet uncompromising when it drops, evoking memories of some classic house and techno, yet remaining very relevant and fresh through excellent layering and the general progression of the track. Listening to it, you wait for the crescendo to finally subside, to which Montagne duly obliges, leaving you hungry for more.

De La Montagne is someone you need to check out, the record is out in all good (online) record stores June 21st.
