Garance – Alice & Suzy EP [Review]

Only bringing you the freshest techno this morning. Out today is a cracking EP from Swiss DJ and label manager Garance. The 4 track EP includes 2 tasty originals and 1 remix of each, coming from Ray Kajioka and Beroshima no less. On paper, a huge EP. On listening, it delivers.

Geneva gal Garance is a name many might not be familiar with but she’s released on stellar labels like Alex Niggemann’s Soulfooled in the past and after this EP, you should take note. A smoothness seeps through both her originals. The more club focused ‘Alice’ rolls forward at a faster pace than the second original ‘Suzy’, whose deep and dark undercurrents are layered perfectly with synth pads. Hard to pick a favourite between the 2 here, but for us, ‘Suzy’ probably edges it for being an engrossing listen.

Big names often disappoint when providing remixes for an EP, almost if if they’re not bothered because it’s not their own EP. However, this is not the case here. The 2 remixes complete this EP.  Kajioka delivers a typically tantalising remix of ‘Alice’ that teases the listener. It reminded us of his track ‘Never Ending’ which builds and builds patiently before exploding into life towards the conclusion.

Rounding off the EP is a remix from techno titan Beroshima. His remix of ‘Suzy’ is simply sensational. Laiden with stabs and heavy hitting synths, this is a techno track we won’t be forgetting any time soon. It featured in our latest Lucky Dip playlist and we might just have to feature it again it’s that good.

Garance releases this EP today on Caduceus Empirical , the sister label of Caduceus Records, a label which recently released the Oliver Deutschmann Flangers EP we premiered. Garance herself is involved in managing both labels, together with Ludivine Rodriguez (co-label manager) and Lad Agabekov (the boss). With this EP she has strengthened their catalogue considerably. This is an EP of the highest quality, worthy of the biggest of labels.
