Italian duo Undercatt took 2015 by storm. Under the wing of Diynamic chief Solomun the pair showcased an awesome fusion of dark melodies and heavy beats. 2016 looks set to be just as successful as the boys sign to Sasha’s Last Night On Earth imprint with ‘Coral’.
In addition to sharing an exclusive full premiere of the brand new track, Undercatt took the time to answer our most pertinent questions, discussing the influence of Solomun, the Sasha seal of approval and much more!
WWD: Thanks for taking the time to chat guys!
Where are you right now and what’s been the focus this week?
Thanks for having us 🙂 For the last 3 weeks, we closed ourselves in studio again, as we didn’t have a lot of time last month due to gigs. We are working now on some new music for the New Year which we are really excited about! We are Italians and we actually still live here, in Pisa, our city. Tuscany is a perfect spot to get in the right mood for producing.
WWD: Talk us through the new release on Last Night On Earth! Was it a long time coming?
We are very happy and satisfied about that! Our first contact with Last Night On Earth started in September, sending them a bunch of our unsigned work, and the feeling was good from the beginning. The final decision has been to release “Coral” as a single, a really special track for us. We produced it months ago, and during summer it received huge support from many big names going around as a promo. It’s something in between Techno and melodic atmospheres, we hope of course that people out there will enjoy.
WWD: What’s it like to get the seal of approval from a legend like Sasha?
Oh that’s amazing. We’ve been big fans for a long time, he’s for sure one of the most influential names around, and we are honoured that he digs our sound. Over the years, he brought LNOE to be a very respected label, so we are happy to do our part.
WWD: How would you describe the development of your production style from the time you first got into making music to now?
We have been into music producing for a very long time, but Undercatt as a project is a very recent one, and we had big luck that it was born with Diynamic. We have been friends for many years, but it’s no longer than 1 year and half ago that we decided to do the next step together. A lot has changed! Well, our musical backgrounds are very different, the approach to music producing comes from very opposite ends. Elia started to DJ very early as a young kid, learning to read the dancefloor reactions and building his taste in Techno and House from the beginning. Luca comes from a more classical background, studying piano as a child and having experiences in music composition in different genres.
WWD: When making new music do you ever feel bound or constricted by what you’ve done before?
Well actually it doesn’t happen often. We like to experiment and try sounds that go wide from electronica to dark techno, with not so many strings attached. We just want improve, we don’t think about genres. Of course we have some signature sounds that we want to be part of our music, sounds that defines us. We think that it is one of the most important things today, make something good that when people listen to it and recognize that it comes from us.
WWD: Obviously Solomun has had a major influence on your path. What’s your favourite thing about being part of the Diynamic family?
Solomun has been the key. For us he is like a big brother, he gave us a lot of feedback and suggestions to be sure we took the right steps at the right moment, he supported our music from the beginning and he has always been available for the right hints. He’s a very good person and he has something that most in this business don’t have: foresight. As we mentioned before, Undercatt was born with them, and for us it has been like a dream comes true. Actually the Diynamic Family is like… a real family! Being a good artist is not enough; in the right time, we have been introduced in it like the new guys last year, and being on the same frequency with all the crew it is so important to do your job well. Diynamic is special because all the artists have their personal style in music, and it’s made by quality. So you can hear a very different kind of music, from deep, to electronica, to techno… everyone does something different from each other.
WWD: What do you hope defines 2016 for Undercatt?
Our best hope is to keep growing like we did in 2015. Last year has been so special for us, we had the chance to start touring and spread our music, so we want to keep going like that. We are also working on some new music that should be on the go soon, we would like to have it ready our next EP for the first half of the year.
WWD: Can you give us three artists we should be following in 2016?
There are many interesting new artists around, and it’s very difficult to name just a few. But if we have to, we would like to support three compatriots that are doing very well, and we think they have very interesting things ahead: Lehar, who just joined the Diynamic family, Musumeci, and Andy Bros.
WWD: What’s the one thing you have coming up that you’re most excited for?
Our calendar for next months is filling up very good, We’ll visit for the first time some countries that we’ve never did, and traveling is one of the most exciting parts of this job. Looking forward also for the official Diynamic Events, there will be some huge ones planned.
WWD: Will we see you in Dublin any time soon ?
At the moment we didn’t have the chance to, but of course we hope to come soon! Thank you!
