Matthew Dear brings the heat to MTL’s Newspeak [Review]

Montréal had the chance to welcome a fiery, on-form guest on a cold, snowy Thursday night this past week, and I’m talking here about no other than Matthew Dear. This international icon was performing a DJ Set at one of the city’s standout underground spots Newspeak and like if all this wasn’t enough, our good friends Ledisko and Ponsolo were in charge of setting the tone to the night.

We arrived just past 11:00, and lots of energy was already floating about the club. We knew these two still-young but scene veterans were ready to hype the place up, but I’ll admit I was happily surprised to hear such good paced sounds as soon as we checked in.

As more people kept coming in, the night took a straight turn courtesy of Ledisko and Ponsolo. The local duo started to drop some heavy beats and the momentum picked up. Stepping up the game like they did is the kind of thing we like to see from DJ’s and the transition was smartly done. A track that represents the desired vibe they’ve successfully achieved can be represented by All the Same Family (Mr. Onester Remix) – Lee Rodriguez.

Matthew Dear entered the stage with a thankful smile on his face and was ready to keep up with the groove that Ledisko and Ponsolo set. Dear started off with a nice blend of house with a disco touch that melt nicely with the homeboys’ opening act. His set sounded really familiar and it made me remember the last time I saw him at Le Belmont back in 2012, needless to say that I Love Neon were also the ones that booked him back then. Although his popularity around the world exponentially increased since then, Matthew Dear remained faithful to his style and delivered a great set once again.

Ledisko and Ponsolo came back on stage to close off the night nicely as they took back control of the decks the same way they left them. If you missed their great performance last night or would like to see them again soon, well you won’t have to wait too long! The experimented duo that mixed in every iconic venue of Montréal will make their first appearance in the holy Dôme of the Satosphere. With the 360 degrees visuals covered by the talented VJs Création Ex Nihilo and MA” and the music covered by Ledisko and Ponsolo for 5 full hours… What are you waiting for?
