This week, we had the pleasure of chatting with Dave Robertson a.k.a. Reset Robot, a music producer from the UK, who just released his “On Your Knees EP” via Danse Club Records (check it out below!). Popular for his past releases on labels such as Drumcode and Truesoul, he has also founded a label called Whistleblower in collaboration with Alan Fitzpatrick and Rhymos. Stopping by to chat, he filled us in on all the latest with his projects.

WWD: Thanks for joining us Dave! How are you doing right now?
Warm!! I just put the wood burner on in the living room.
WWD: I found an old interview on Drumcode blog (2011) where you talked about your background as studio engineer. How has your production style developed over the last 5 years?
My style has definitely developed but it’s difficult to say how. I think my understanding of what makes a decent track is better. Which kick drums sound good in a club and which don’t. Sample and sound selection is a huge part of it.
WWD: Nowadays what are the main challenges a producer has to deal with?
Choice! There are so many options and so many different possibilities when it comes to gear and software. It’s hard to block it all out and not get sucked into thinking you need the next thing all the time.
WWD: Do you ever feel a sense of boredom while producing? It seems like a taboo subject, which no one talks about…!
Of course, if that happens then you need to mix things up a bit. I usually start recording things or playing about with a different piece of kit. I normally end up at the same sort of style but changing the way you start a track can freshen your mind.
WWD: Your release “On Your Knees EP” is out now. What can you tell us about the creative process behind it?
I found the kick drum which is in all 3 tracks. I wrote the title track and the other 2 followed pretty quickly. I normally have a burst of 3-4 tracks and then won’t do anything for a few weeks.
WWD: How did the connection with Danse Club Records come about?
The guys hit me up for a remix last year (2015). I chose a track by Ki.Mi called ‘Like Me’. I sent then my first attempt which they knocked back. Lucky they did as the final remix turned out to be one of my biggest tracks last year.
WWD: What is going on with your label project Whistleblower?
Whistleblower is going great! We’ve got a big year this year. I’m releasing in February then we have another Rhymos release. Leading up to summer we’ve got a remix from Alan Fitzpatrick and I believe we’ve just signed 2 tracks from a top artist!!
WWD: Have you got any forthcoming projects you want to tell us about?
More of the same from me with things getting a little tougher sound wise. Myself and Alan are working on new Customer material and will be doing a few parties with the Mobilee crew this year.
