Dimas is considered by many as a pioneer in the Spanish dance music scene. With over 2 decades of productions under his belt and winning a DMC championship at age 17, he is a true artist like no other. As his “Jazzing” track is being released on Toolroom this month, we sat down with him to talk about his recent gig in Tokyo, his label Beafreak recordings and his interests for Victor Calderon & Danny Tenaglia in the early days.
WWD: Can you describe D-Formation sound?
My sound normally is between Techno and Tech House but what can more describe my sound is the power of every track. I love the underground sound but I also love the deep melodies. That’s why I think that my sound can be described like this – underground sound with melodic dyes.
WWD: You have an upcoming song with Rick Pier O’Neil named “Jazzing” to be released on Toolroom. Can you tell us more about it?
“Jazzing” is a collaboration with my friend Rick, we really enjoy working together. We compensate very well, I like the fusion that comes between the two of us. This track is pure Tech House but with some elements of jazz, that’s why the name of the track is “Jazzing”. It is a pure and honest track; I think it will not be unnoticed. It’s going to be released by Toolroom in the end of June.
WWD: What genre would this track be? Jazzy? Tech House?
As I said earlier, it is a Tech House track but with enough elements of jazz and percussion. In general this is a very organic track, which results in something tremendous. I am just waiting for the release date to see what is going to happen.
WWD: How is it like to play in Tokyo?
Well, Tokyo is an amazing city, full of life day and night. I have had the great luck to play on many occasions in this city. I have played in clubs like Ageha, Womb, Origami and more.Tokyo is not the only one city where I had the luck to be. Osaka and Nagoya are also the top cities to make good sets. The truth is that – I am always glad and it is a big pleasure for me to return there. The people are nice and grateful to me, of course they like partying and they appreciate good music also.
WWD: Who is your biggest influence from the early days until now and why?
I am the kind of person who is not affected by the influence of someone or by the trends. It has been a lot of years since I work in the studio and since I am behind the DJ booth. Of course during all this time there were a lot of people who influenced me and who gave me enthusiasm and excitement for my career. I remember in my early days, as D-Formation, Victor Calderon and Danny Tenaglia were the two persons from whom I was affected by. I am talking in general not only about the music. They showed the right way to make a DJ career and how to always keep it up. What really matters is knowing when you have to make a change, and from these 2 people exactly, I gained a lot.
WWD: What can we expect from D-Formation this summer? Any particular upcoming gigs and releases?
Like every summer, beach and sun Hahahaha
You will be able to see me in places like Ibiza, Sharm El Sheik, Egypt, Bulgaria (Black Sea), Mauritius Island and more.
About the new projects – very early in July one of my first tracks will be out “Signs & Portents”, which I think was one of my biggest hits. It will be released on my own label Beatfreak Recordings. There will be remixes in 2016 by Oscar L, Sergio Fernandez, Steve Slights, Ivan Pica, Made In Riot and myself.
WWD: Any exciting artists coming up on your label Beatfreak?
Yes, artists like Alberto Ruiz, Oscar L, Sergio Fernandez and Steve Slights. Beatfreak will be in full form soon. More over, the label has promising names such as Joe Red and Chris Main.
WWD: In case there is something that we have missed. Would u like to add something for your fans?
Well, I will just say that – be aware of 2016, because there will be many many surprises from me. And of course thanks for all the support during all these years.
