Shaun Reeves & Pablo Marco step up on Jonny White’s Vinyl-only Sunday Money Music [Review]

Art Department’s Jonny White continues the development on recently-founded vinyl only imprint Sunday Money Music with a dynamite second release in ‘Day Before Last’ EP. Coming together on the record are Detroit techno stalwart and Visionquest member Shaun Reeves and musical accomplice Pablo Marco (FrameSounds, Cadenza Lab).

Leading the EP is ‘Lianas’ – a mystical groover centred around a salacious set of hi-hats, intricate melodic touches and rhythmically engrossing drum pattern. The track sets a hypnotic tone, which is then followed by ‘Etiup’. A2 sees Marco and Reeves combining a lion-like squelching bass-sound with a punchy kick drum and snappy ensemble of hits.

Title track ‘Day Before Last’ kicks things up a notch with a guttural, consuming bass-line. The track juxtaposes an aggressive low-end element with a harrowing collection of high-end textures. Closing out the record is ‘Terra’, a similarly groovy affair. It displays an exquisite example of synth-work in a lush, liquid lead, which floats upon a tender groove. Rolling in constant evolution, it offers a scintillating trip in itself.
