Manchester producer Rudosa marks the latest in an impressive series of releases with a full EP titled ‘Ultimate Seduction’ on British label Underground Audio. The rising talent follows in the footsteps of heavy hitting like Cristoph, Dale Howard and Montel in showcasing his talents with the UK tastemaker and if the quality continues his sure to see a similar trajectory in his career. Taking five from the hustle, he talks us through the new record, his relationship with UA and where to next…
WWD: Thanks for joining us Mark! What have you been getting up to this week?
Mainly, I have been working on my latest EP which is a techno Drumcode Style EP for the peak time of my sets. I have also been teaching up and coming DJs & Producers at my school, Make Me A DJ.
WWD: You’re back on Underground Audio this month with the Ultimate Seduction EP, tell us a bit about putting the record together?
This EP came together when I recently did three shows at Sankeys Manchester where I used to be a resident. I wanted tracks I could test in these shows that would still pack punch but work on a warm up set or closing set. With Ultimate Seduction I wanted something I could use at the end of a warm up and with Mind Games something I could use towards the end of my set & Let me tell you in the middle.
WWD: Talk us through your creative process! Do you have any secrets for getting in the mood to produce?
My process tends to change, sometimes I can work on records that have started during lessons and other times I blast them out fast. For me normally it starts by creating a solid Kick Drum, Clap and Off Beat Hat/shaker. There is something magical about getting these 3 simple things working together perfectly and can set you of on a great track.
WWD: It’s not your first time working with UA, how did the relationship get started?
I have known Kal from Underground Audio since the whole thing was just a concept and its been a pleasure to watch him grow it from a website, to management to a label. Over the years we have got closer and closer and tend to go to similar parties. He listens to work I’ve been doing and I check out what he has coming up on the label and give him feedback. This EP came about with him listening to what I had been working on and he told me from the start he wanted it so it felt right to go with him. Knowing how he works it just felt perfect.
WWD: Three go-to dance-floor fillers for you right now?
Great Question ☺
1. Hush & Sleep – Ilmatar (Original Mix) – First heard this being played by Joseph Capriati closing awakenings festival and also drop it at WHP opening last month. Its perfect for me for when you have been playing hard and want to bring it back down towards more of a melodic feel.
2. ANGLE – Hold Your Breath (Luca Agnelli Remix) – This one is peak time again but love everything Luca Agnelli does at the minute and will play one of his records in most sets.
3. Dyone – Only Love Can Set U-Free (Bicep Remix) – This one is something totally different but works so well as a last track.
WWD: One artist that’s left a lasting impression on you this year?
Mentioned him already but would have to say Joseph Capriati from watching him play till 8am in fabric and straight pounders to in Ibiza where he lets his groovier style come in its where I aspire to be. He is able to play and produce music that can fit into both techno and tech house parties, he does this perfectly. What has taken him to another level for me is the addition to the rmx1000 to his set up the added drums to his clever overlays of classic vocals over techno is deadly.
WWD: It’s been a big year for you so far with tracks on the likes of New Violence, Wow! and Stereo Productions. What’s been your highlight so far?
A highlight for me in the past 12 months was last Nov at Dreams Don’t Sleep @ WHP. We managed to blag our way from VIP to backstage to the main stage to catch the end of Adam Beyer changing over to Maceo Plex. A couple of tracks into his set he dropped my remix of Nathan Barato When I Do My Thang! I’ve never had a smile that hurt as much as this moment did! Totally out of the blue! Great to hear a track of mine in a huge room like that and after that I uploaded a video that got 65k views and Adam Beyer asked me for a copy. I was buzzing.
WWD: You’ve made your way to some top imprints early in your career. What’s your advice for emerging artists on convincing quality labels to take a chance? is it simply good music that’s the answer?
Make sure your music fits is the first thing, focus on one label for a while and use their top releases as a reference on mix and sounds.
When you feel you have it id upload a private SoundCloud link and send a personalized email to the label boss or A&R. After a while I try and meet the people who run the label so they can get a face to the name as this helps massively and builds connections.
WWD: With the closing of Fabric etc, there’s been a lot of negative press around the British House and Techno scene. Is there anything you’ve witnessed in recent weeks that gave you a shot of optimism?
Lots of things give me optimism mainly I would say it’s the number of young people wanting to learn to DJ and produce music, the scene is getting stronger and stronger and the next generation want to know everything around the scene. Also how well lots of up and coming producers are doing at the moment and being brought through by bigger artists. Its makes me feel the DREAM is achievable.
WWD: What would make for the ideal finish to 2016 for you?
An Ideal end to the year would be further Beatport success with forth coming releases and getting the new records I’m working on onto the labels I have in my sights.
WWD: Before we say goodbye, what else is on the agenda for the coming months?
I have a lot of new music to crack on with, I’m heading out to ADE to network and party with Kal from UA. We are also planning on heading over to Drumcode in London on Halloween, which should be great and finally I’m going to spend NYD in Berlin. Also with my exciting new venture Jersey Street Studio’s I expect it’s going to be crazy.
