Select Cuts: Milan’s Modular Project rinse the latest episode in the series

Electronic, News
12 October 2017

Alberto and Alex aka Modular Project, are two Italian djs and producers born and raised between Milan and Como. The project began in 2012 and after several releases on Rebirth, OFF recordings, Moodmusic, Constant Circles, Motek and Perpetualis Music, they are now resident DJs at the ‘VOLT’ club Milan, where they had the pleasure of playing alongside big names like Mano Le Tough, Baikal, Scuba, Kiasmos, Barnt and many more. Recently they launched their own label ‘NOTHING IS REAL’ in collaboration with the renowned Rebirth records. This week, we’re excited to welcome them onboard in the latest edition of the Select Cuts mix series.

WWD: When did you realise that electronic music would be a fundamental part of your life?

When we met our passion for electronic music was still just a hobby. We played both as resident djs in a party out of Milan called “Vision” but everyone with their own project. It was that our musical tastes crossed. After the first tracks produced together we immediately realized that it was a good idea and that electronic music was becoming an integral part of our lives.

WWD: What have been the most important moments for you since you started working together?

One of the most important moments since we created Modular Project was definitely signing our first contract with an international label like OFF recordings. it was a unique emotion. But another important moment was the first release on our label with a beautiful EP from Jay Shepheard called “The Heat” that we had the pleasure of remixing.

WWD: How much time do you dedicate to production?

We use to spend 3/4 days at week on the production then we go to bed early because we prefer working during the day. We like sleeping at night! haha.

WWD: What genres have influenced you most?

We listen to everything, but the new wave sound from 80s has a great influence on our productions. The most influential artists are Boards Of Canada, Brian Eno, Depeche Mode and Kraftwerk.

WWD: Tell us about your new label ‘NOTHING IS REAL’ and your projects for the future.

‘NOTHING IS REAL’ was born because we have the desire to create something ours. The idea was also born after we met the “Rebirth” boss, Daniele Contrini aka Shield, who believed in us and in our music and asked us to collaborate with him by creating a sublabel that had a more electronic sound than the soul house of Rebirth. So last June we left with Jay Shepheard and in September with our ep called ‘Andromeda’ with remixes by Nhar and Tom Peters. The next step is to organize showcases in Europe and in Italy with the artists who are printing on the label. At the moment we are also working on an album that we are gonna to present live but we are still at the beginning of the project and there is a lot of work to do.

WWD: When is your next release?

Our next release called ‘Alphaville’ consists of two our original tracks with two amazing remixes from Fairmont and Nuno Dos Santos. Obviously the ep come out in the end of November on our beloved Nothing Is Real. You can listen one of this track in the mix. Enjoy the sound! 😉
