Justin Jay and Thumpasaurus’s EP is an Outlandish, Explorative Work of Art

Over the last few years Justin Jay has established himself as an innovator within dance music, and his latest self-titled EP with Thumpasaurus only adds to that reputation.

After finding success as a DJ and producer with the help of Claude Vonstroke and Dirtybird, Jay shed his shackles and dove head first into Fantastic Voyage; his record label and party collective.

Justin Jay’s initial interest in music was sparked when he was a college student making music with his friends just for fun. Now with Fantastic Voyage he has the means to make and share music in that same spirit. FV has seen releases by Jay’s close friends and frequent collaborators Sam Von Horn, Benny Bridges, and Ulf Blonde, but it also gave birth to a truly unique style of performance.

Among his friends Jay was one of the few who was into dance music while the rest of his buddies played instruments. At first this was a hindrance, but Jay figured out how everyone could play together. He tried incorporating live instrumentation into his DJ sets, and beyond all expectations it worked. Now when he performs there will often be live guitars, keys, drums, and horns.

Naturally this level of creativity caught the attention of other artists, the most recent of which was Thumpasaurus. Together with Jay they have just released a self-titled EP with seven white-hot funky cuts fitting for any dance party.

The most notable offering on the EP is the new original, “Wayne’s World”. This  track explores Jay’s affinity for groovy dance beats as well as Thumpasaurus’s upbeat feel-good vibes.

The rest of the EP features a series of edits and remixes of Thumpasaurus tunes done by Jay. An important part of FV’s ethos is to have fun making music, even if the tracks don’t come out perfect. So while these edits might not be production-perfection, their overall energy is infectious. Each of them still holds true to the original track, but with an extra punch of four-on-the-floor.

Justin Jay and Thumpasaurus’ self-titled EP is now available everywhere on Fantastic Voyage. Listen to the single “Wayne’s World” as well as the full record below.
