A Night in Review: Cuttin Headz at Old Fountain Studios

Old Fountain Studios. With a previous life as a television studio, expectations were certainly high when we headed up to Wembley on Sunday to catch a glimpse of London’s newest event space. Very high in fact, as not only did the venue look tip top, the lineup was suitably good as well. A Cuttin Headz showcase, the label of american duo The Martinez Bros, that featured Arkityp, Matt Tolfrey, Argy.

A never been used before venue, Old Fountain Studios delivered on all fronts. Crisp speakers, outrageous lighting, and a soundtrack of some of the finest minimal beats in the scene. You know the drill: here’s our top three records from the day. There are some absolute corkers coming up.

Track No. 1 – Casey Spillman ‘Baltimore’ Draft LTD

Dubby. Dubby, dubby, dubby. The energy of Archie Hamilton b2b Rossko is infectious, and when the two of them are rolling out beats like this, it’s no wonder the crowd was whipped into a frenzy. Courtesy of talented producer Casey Spillman, ‘Baltimore’ is the third track of Spillman’s ‘Spaceman’ EP. Tune in, because we’ll let the record do the talking.

Track No. 2 – Janet Jackson ‘What have you done for me lately’ (Michael Roasa’s Deserted Love Edit) – Desert Hearts Records

The American bros we’re out in full force by this point. Deep into their set, this jazzy groover was something special. With a vocal sample that can’t help but put a smile on your face, the wobbling bassline compliments proceedings very nicely indeed. If you’re not familiar, it’s time to get to know: Desert Hearts Records have the belters.

Track No. 3 – Ruffneck ft. Yavahn ‘Everybody  be Somebody’ (Arkityp edit) – Unreleased

Now this was played by both the Fuse boys, as well as The Martinez Bros, and it’s an absolute blinder. The original is a certified classic, but this minimal edit absolutely tore the roof off. We’re not exactly sure whose edit it is, but our best bet would be Rossko and Archie themselves. With all kinds of beeps and squeaks, and a soothing female vocal to keep things moving, we’re keen to see this one released. Catch the original below, it’s still a beauty.

And last but not least, a word has to be said about the venue itself. It was everything we’d expected: incredible productions, a perfect soundsytem, and a suitably receptacle crowd. In the midst of the recent raids on Georgian venue Tbilisi, it’s a stark reminder of how fortunate London is when it comes to available event spaces, and gives revellers a long-to-be-remembered experience.

Paul Kalkbrenner’s new album Parts of Life is released on the 18th of May, a week after the launch party last week at Old Founatin Studios. Preorder the album here.
