“Who is Themba?” It’s a question the South African artist has posed to his listeners since he emerged on the scene earlier this year, most recently as the title of an epic single. As more of his tracks surface the picture becomes clearer, and it’s not hard to see why Themba has captured the attention of Black Coffee, Pete Tong, Hot Since 82, and a whole host of other prominent tastemakers. Themba’s sound is rooted in his homeland, making use of local singers, songwriters, and percussionists to craft a unique take on house and techno, and now Yoshitoshi Recordings have the chance to debut two more of his special creations – “Vuma” and “Lost.”

“Vuma” is built around a groove that is impossible to stay still for, enhanced by its colorful percussion and propulsive bass. It’s a tune that sends crowds into a frenzy, with sporadic chants that impart a visceral element resonating deep within you. “Lost” dials in a more melodic touch, its arpeggiated kalimba riff building steadily to a beautiful climax of lush pads and haunting vocals. The track makes excellent use of percussion as well, and its in these sounds that we hear Themba crafting a style that is truly his own. We’re excited to be debuting these tracks from an artist who is surely on a path to great success. You can listen to the full premiere of ‘Vuma’ exclusively on When We Dip. Enjoy !
