In celebration of their 200th release, D-Formation returns to Beatfreak Recordings for the much anticipated follow up to his chart topping ‘Anbar’. Released in April of this year the cross pollinated creation reached #3 in Beatport’s highly competitive progressive house chart. Played by many of the industry’s elite DJs it remains one of the year’s stand out tracks, having left fans of the Spanish artist and Beatfreak label boss wondering what his next big project will be. Now as the seasons shift, D-Formation returns to his comfortable home with his most ambitious project to date ‘This Is Beatfreak’. Spread across eight tracks and named in conjunction with the label’s ADE event at Club NL, this collaborative concept mini album features joint productions with Citizen Kain, Rick Pier O’Neil, Stephane K and Dj Koutarou., along with three solo originals and two DJ tools.
Beginning with the solo piece ‘DC 18’, D-Formation explores shades of deep cosmic techno. On a bed of tight, punchy beats and crunchy electronics comes finely tuned percussion and a smart tonal theme. Buzzing swells add drama and tension as the main break commences before clustered stabs shift energy into an exhilarating finale. You can listen to the full premiere of ‘DC 18’ while reading the cool little interview with did with him.
WWD: Hi D-Formation, first of all thank you for chatting with us today! How are you and where are you in the world right now?
Hi friends, the pleasure is mine and I’m really happy to be able to chat with you. The truth is that I am very well and of course with a lot of desire to continue working on all my projects. I am newcomer from the ADE where we had an acceptance with our incredible Beatfreak party, it has been a very productive week but already back with the batteries charged.
WWD: Your own inprint Beatfreak Recordings is about to release its 200th reference, it’s a mini album by yourself. Can you tell us more about this release and why it is so special?
This reference is very special for me for various reasons. As you said this is the release number 200, it is a very considerable number in addition to 20 years behind the label. Also of course I wanted it to be something special that’s why I released this reference in the form of mini álbum. It consists of 6 original tracks and 2 dj tolos in which there are also collaborations with great artists like Citizen Kain, Rick Pier O’Neil, Stephene K & Dj Koutarou A., I am very happy to finally see this release very close, November 9.
WWD: Recently you did a great remix on your label for the French artist Citizen Kain. The remix has reached Top 7 in the Progressive House chart by Beatport. Can you tell us how did you decide to do this interpretation and what inspired you?
Well I really love all the productions of Citizen Kain and this track has not been anything difficult to inspire me. It is true that my remix is quite different from the original but it keeps the essence of the original track. I am really happy with the final result, reaching the top #7 of the Progressive House chart and staying at the top of it for a long time.
WWD: We all can see that 2018 was extremely good for you as a producer. All your tracks did very well in the online store charts. Was that your aim for 2018?
Actually I am more than satisfied with all the work that I have done in this 2018. The objectives I had for this year have been fulfilled and over and even the year has not ended. All my productions, absolutely all, have been at the top of the top 100, I have gone from being in position 501 in December of 2017 to being right now after 10 months in position 14 on Beatport. I have had 4 Top # 10 on Beatport and I have received the support of many great artists, what else I can ask for?
WWD: The success of Beatfreak Recordings is pretty nice this year. It’s in the top 8 best Progressive House labels in Beatport and with more then 80 tracks in the Top 100 of the Deep House, Progressive House, Techno or Melodic House & Techno charts. How do you manage to run a great label and how do you combine your work in the studio with?
It really is a bit complicated to handle all this. I can tell you that I have almost no personal life during this year, I only work and work. Anyway I have the great help of my label manager Teddy, if not it wouldn’t be possible to take the label to where we’ve taken it. I am really happy to see that Beatfreak has become one of the best labels worldwide in the last year. Here is the moment to thank again to all the great artists who believe in Beatfreak and to all our supporters!
WWD: You are part of the Quivver’s album that he recently released on his label Contolled Substance. How did you come up to this collaboration?
Quivver is another one of the greatest artists that I’ve always liked to do a collaboration with. In this case we keep in touch from the incredible remix that he did for Wally Lopez and Beatfreak. This remix arrived to number 1 on Beatpòrt, since then we have kept in contact and then he proposed to do a collaboration for his álbum. I am really happy to be able to collaborate with him on this album with the track Aside in which Rick Pier O’Neil is also with us.
WWD: Beatfreak Recordings had its first showcase in Amsterdam this year in one of the biggest European events – Amsterdam Dance Event. How the party went and how did you chose the artists on the line up?
Our party at ADE was a great success for this year. It was amazing and we received the support and assistance of many people and many great artists who decided to come and see us. I can only thank everyone and especially all the line up that was impressive as: Betoko, Carlos Manaça, Darin Epsilon, EdOne, Kintar, Wally Lopez, Marc Depulse, Haze-M and Javier Gonzalez, unfortunately we wasn’t able to put more Beatfeak artists as there wasn’t enough time. I would also like to thank all those who, even though they were not in the line up but stayed there enjoying with all of us.
WWD: How D-Formation spends his spare time?
Well as I said earlier this year I don’t have much free time, I have dedicated entirely to work. In the cases when I get spare time I just sit down to watch a movie that I love and forget everything for a while and of course also enjoy the family.
WWD: Would you share with us your plans about your artist project and Beatfreak for 2019?
Certainly there are many plans for the coming months. The Beatfreak showcase at ADE was the beginning of many show cases that we will do around the world, that is one of the aims apart from making the label continuously growing day after day. In terms of D-Formation, I believe that I am in one of my best moments and I will continue doing what I love most, which is producing in the studio and playing around the world. There are many outstanding collaborations with many great artists that will be released soon in the coming months.
WWD: Which are your best memories as a DJ?
It’s complicated with all the years I’ve been DJing to tell you just my best moment. I’ve had incredible moments that I’ll always remember and also bad ones of course. I think that from all this experience as a DJ and having traveled all over the world I’m left with all that wonderful people who I have known during all these years. Of course also one of the things that I value most of all my travels and experiences as a dj is to have known many different cultures in different countries and see that even being very different we are all united by same reason and that is the music. I only can say thanks to the life for having been able to live all these experiences and having great friends around the world.
WWD: Who would you like to do a collaboration with?
I am a music lover, I could tell you that I would like to collaborate with Tale of Us for example and I would really like to do it, but also I really like to collaborate with someone from whom I can learn something new and for this it doesn’t t have to be a great name. It can be any other person that gives me something different and that I feel really comfortable with, it does not matter if he is a super known artist or a stranger.
