Teenage Mutants are a German duo whose tracks have been released on a wide selection of labels ranging from Stil Vor Talent to Tronic. Focusing mainly on techno, their most recent release came out on UMEK’s label 1605. We caught up with the guys to chat about the release and find out what else they have planned for 2020.

WWD – Hi guys, I wanted to start by wishing you a happy New Year, have you made any resolutions for 2020? 

TM – Happy New Year! We are always working to develop our music to a higher level of production. So, we have been in the studio for the whole January and playing only selected gigs in our local area to have some time to breathe and reflect.  Most DJs seem to say… less drinking and less drugs, but I think resolutions should be focused on making only the best music possible.

WWD – Before our chat today I checked out your new EP on UMEK’s label 1605, could you talk me through the EP? 

TM – Yes, it’s our first release of 2020 and our first time working with UMEK and his 1605 Family. The EP consists of two originals called “Return” and “Raven” plus features an acid style remix from Heerhorst.

WWD – The new release is very techno focused, but I’m also familiar with your deeper tracks on labels like Stil Vor Talent. Do you find it hard switching between genres? 

TM – The deeper stuff is quite old now… I think from 2015 or 2016. For around four years now we have focusing only on techno. From time to time we still work with some deep elements, as switching through genres is not a problem for us, but I think to build up the right audience it’s best to focus on just one genre. In 2016 we started making techno and last year was one of the best for us. We are currently No. 8 in the most sold techno artist on Beatport.

WWD – Is this the first time you have released on 1605, and how did you contact the label, as I’d thought the label was just for UMEK’s own music? 

TM – We talked from time to time through the Instagram messenger, and last November we ask him to do a collaboration track (which will be released in March on 1605). After doing the collaboration UMEK then asked for an EP which is the one now on sale.

WWD – I see your new release also has a remix from Heerhorst who you often collaborate with on original material, how do you guys know each other? 

TM – It’s a long-term friendship. We’ve known Heerhorst aka Basti for more than thirteen years now…he is always someone we looked up. He is one of the greatest electronic producer and equipment nerds on earth! Haha

WWD – What else do you have planned for 2020, do you already have a busy schedule of releases?

TM – I already mentioned the collaboration with UMEK, but we have also a remix of Nakadia plus a remix for Giorgia Anguilla along with a new release on Terminal M. That’s all we can announce for now, but there is lots more to come…

WWD – Could you recommend us a couple of up and coming artists who you think will break through this year, as it seems like a good time to be looking out for fresh talent?

TM – Heerhorst, Ausilio Jo, Zaungast and Heinick are all fantastic talents whose music we love.
