EDGE opens the new year by welcoming Weird Sounding Dude to the label for his debut EP. As one of India’s rising musical mavericks, Weird Sounding Dude has emerged from his country’s electronic landscape as a premiere progressive house talent. Long a favourite of genre tastemakers Hernan Cattaneo, Nick Warren, Guy J, Guy Mantzur, Khen and more, the Bangalore resident often touches on disparate themes and sounds, straddling the divide between intergalactic design and groove-centric hypnotism. With a career that now spans over a decade, Weird Sounding Dude has compiled an impressive discography, with standout releases via Anjunadeep, Hoomidaas, The Soundgarden and Sudbeat Music; while also being a revered DJ, performing alongside 16BL, Cubicolor, Guy J, Jody Wisternoff, Khen, Mind Against and more. With 2023 wrapping up with a well-received remix for WARPP, Weird Sounding Dude begins 2024 by making his much-anticipated EDGE debut with a three-track showcase entitled ‘Hands Of Dawn’.
Beginning with ‘Slider’ Weird Sounding Dude puts a firm focus on the dance floor which sets the tone for the EP. Full of rejuvenating energies, the Bangalore resident cleverly blends robust kick drums and electric grooves with swerving stabs and orbiting effects. The progressive house phenom’s creative attitude reveals itself further across the main break; with a delicate melodic theme emerging, captivating the senses and building anticipation, before melting down as thunderous bass swells cue a hypnotic finale.
Moving forward to the second and title selection ‘Hands Of Dawn’, Weird Sounding Dude crafts a feel-good progressive excursion that’s nicely suited for those uplifting club moments. Booming yet dreamy, its cruising vibe instantly commands your attention, through snatches of rolling percussion, melodic fragments and siren-like synth flares, eventually arriving at a textural break to further enchant the listener. Here, its pneumatic energy turns over beautifully, as melodies open and sonics swirl, cleverly co-axing for a hair-raising crescendo and suitably groovy conclusion.
Rounding out the release are the poignant sounds of ‘Edge Of The Ocean.’ Looking to bring a greater emotional quality to the collection, Weird Sounding Dude flexes a deeper side of his studio repertoire here, with a slow-burning quality that captures the timeless appeal he’s become so beloved for. Stirring themes work in perfect sonic unison atop buoyant beats and voluptuous grooves, uniquely accented with alien-like stabs and revitalizing refrains, perfectly setting up a finale where euphoria awaits with arms raised and eyes closed.
