Alexander Gerlach has been making music as Niconé since 2007, both solo and alongside the likes of Jan Blomqvist and Philip Bader. His music is more about feeling than genre and comes with a hint of warming nostalgia on labels like Stil vor Talent, Katermukke and Bar 25 Music as well as Dantze, which he co-runs with Bader. He works here with LIKE records founder, live act and key German mainstay David Hasert, who also takes care of bookings at Reineke Fuchs. Between those commitments, he plays all over the world and serves up a fine blend of house, tech and in-between styles. Completing the trio is Irish artist, vocalist and pianist Enda Gallery who is known for profound and thought-provoking lyrics and for blending hip-hop, Irish traditional music and timeless electronic sounds as well as playing concerts all over the world.
The gorgeous ‘For U’ immediately strikes a poignant note with falsetto vocals tugging at the heart strings. Well-swung hits and moody synth drones suspend the magical moments which play out with beautiful chord changes and subtle breakdowns. ‘Always Wanting’ is another stirring mix of crystal-cut vocals and heavy, melancholic bass notes with glassy melodies building tension in the middle of the mix. It’s a tune that is both optimistic and uplifting but tinged with sadness as the wavy house groove rolls on next to tender piano keys.
