Inspired by his children’s creative development, Lane 8 releases magical album ‘Childish,’ via This Never Happened

Lane 8 returns with his fifth full-length album ‘Childish’ on his own This Never Happened label. His first album of new music since 2022’s ‘Reviver,’ ‘Childish’ finds acclaimed electronic producer Daniel Goldstein merging his decade-plus work as Lane 8 with a personal life full of music, art, family, and the joy that creativity so often generates. The album’s ten songs feature collaborations ranging from Arctic Lake and TNH labelmates Sultan + Shepard to indie-pop vocalist Art School Girlfriend, electronic duo Kasablanca, and singer/songwriter Tailor.

Intended to be heard as a full body of work, there were no advance singles released from Childish ahead of its release on September 27th – a decision that speaks to the deeply personal nature of the record itself, as well as towards Goldstein’s love of the album as a form of artistic expression.

“The records that inspired me as a child, I’d buy on a feeling,” he explains. “I wanted to emulate that sense of magic rather than have these singles out in the world for months before the record’s released. I’m really excited for everyone to experience the entire album as a whole.”

Featuring pearler-created cover art designed by his daughter, the album title and thematic arc of ‘Childish’ was spawned through Goldstein’s observing his kids as they grew more artistically curious. “It was inspiring to watch them become creative—drawing, crafts, bead projects, silly songs—in this very innocent and pure way,” he states. “The experience made me realize I can just make an album for the pure enjoyment of it, without worrying too much how it will be received. I set out to make music that was for myself, first and foremost—music that, in that moment, was what I was really excited about.”

‘Childish’ marks the latest chapter in Goldstein’s career as Lane 8, from his growing discography of studio albums – including 2020’s breakthrough ‘Brightest Lights’ – to his notorious This Never Happened live show, which prohibits audiences taking photos and videos and instead encourages his fanbase to experience the music in the moment. His record label under the same name currently boasts over 200 releases, including ‘Childish.’
