A new artist pairing to grace the EDGE catalogue, Simos Tagias & Tonaco make their label debut with the stunning ‘Alnilam / Theosis’ EP. A single remix comes from the legendary figure of Sebastian Sellares.

Simos Tagias has been a staple of the underground house scene for well over a decade. With almost 500 production credits to his name since 2012, his work has graced such luminary imprints as Paul Thomas’ UV, GMJ & Matter’s Meanwhile and the evergreen Particles and Proton Music, both of which have shaped the global progressive scene. Similarly, Tonaco has witnessed a rich seam of impressive releases over the past 5 years. Drawing parallels with the cerrado in his home State of Tocantins, the Brazilian producer has shaped his music around a unique sonic identity and an eclectic range of sources from Pink Floyd to Guy J. As such, his work has featured regularly on Meanwhile, Mango Alley and Kasey Taylor’s Vapour Recordings.

Opener ‘Alnilam’ is a deep, flowing Progressive House gem that retains the hallmarks of the pair’s own production work. A hefty, chest-thumping kick, head-shaking percussive groove and subterranean bass groove lay the foundations for atmospheric soundscapes redolent in delays and reverb to pan and pulsate gently across the stereo spectrum. Effortless melodies float intoxicatingly across the mid-range while a plucked motif comes to the fore at the breakdown before exploding into the second half, accompanied by the rich soundscape of earlier phases. The result is a gloriously powerful and emotive track.

The slightly more laidback vibe of ‘Theosis’ creates a powerful and resonant backdrop that sees an immaculate rhythmic groove combine with syncopated bass pattern as the track moves through its early stages. Evolving steadily, a rippling motif gradually emerges to create a soft and coruscating synth layer that expands more fully at the mid-point with counterpoint precision and delicate analogue edge. Hitting its heights in the second half, melodies flow with ease as the driving rhythm carries the track through to an outstanding conclusion.

Sebastian Sellares needs little introduction to EDGE faithful. An accomplished musician from an early age, the Córdoba-based artist has seen considerable international success with an ever-growing music portfolio finding favour with such esteemed imprints as Anjunadeep, UV and Meanwhile. A further notable highlight was his 3-track ‘Melomaniac’ EP for EDGE in mid-2024. Now returning, the Sebastian Sellares remix of ‘Alnilam’ is a typically smooth and infectious reworking that drives forward with trademark melodic flourish. Laying foundations with an immaculate bass groove and atmospheric effects, the central refrain of the original emerges at the breakdown in spine-tingling fashion, before exploding into the second half with a blissful interpretation that cuts through the mix with a glassy synth sound, propelling the track into club-friendly territory.

Simos Tagias & Tonaco impress once more with the sonic splendour of the ‘Alnilam / Theosis’ EP, while a 24-carat remix from Sebastian Sellares adds further cachet to a stellar release.
