Nearly twenty years in the making, this debut album from Budakid lands on his own label Flores, and it is a work of rare depth and intention. Budakid, the Dutch-Indonesian producer, DJ, singer and multi-instrumentalist, has always made music in a very particular way. Organic and built from the ground up, his sound is crafted on real instruments and synths, all self recorded. A drummer long before he discovered drum machines, rhythm and harmony are interwoven through everything he does, a legacy of a musical upbringing and four years of formal study at the conservatorium. Across a career spanning more than a thousand shows on every continent, his music has drawn support from the likes of Adriatique, Hernan Cattaneo, Bonobo and Dixon, with releases connected to Sasha, Max Cooper, Solomun and Guy J along the way.
‘Dreams Stretched Beyond’ was born in the Alpine refuge of the Tyrol, where Budakid spent almost three years surrounded by fresh mountain air and quiet landscapes, tuning out the everyday noise and looking deep inside himself. The result is an album in its truest sense, more than the sum of its parts, with energy flowing between each track. It also marks a new evolution in his work, as his own soft, soulful vocals thread through many of the songs for the first time, unique and absolutely perfect for the cinematic soundscapes he builds.
Every great album needs a perfect closing track, and ‘Where It Goes’ is exactly that. It is the moment when the lights go up, catchy and melodic, leaving you with equal parts euphoria and the gentle lament that something special has come to an end.
