Detroit has always had a way of producing artists who carry the whole city with them, and sillygirlcarmen is one of the clearest examples of that right now. A DJ, singer, promoter and the head of the Sun & Sound Detroit label, she has spent the last few years showing up everywhere that matters, from TV Lounge and Flash DC to Silo NYC, Djoon Paris and Public Works SF, plus four sets across Movement weekend that made her one of the Detroit stage highlights. With releases on Nervous Records, Popgang Records and Soul Clap Records behind her, and dancefloors shared with the likes of Louie Vega, Moodymann, DJ Minx, Green Velvet, Nora En Pure, Will Clarke and Eats Everything, she has built a sound that keeps one foot in soulful house warmth and the other in modern club momentum.

That same personality runs right through her guest mix for Dancefloor Romancer, our sister channel. It is a compelling and slightly quirky ride, full of groove, character and the kind of playful selection that only really comes from someone who spends as much time on the mic and behind the counter as she does behind the decks. Soulful cuts sit next to punchier club moments, and the whole thing moves with the ease of a DJ who trusts her crowd.

Collaboration has always been the engine of Detroit dance music, and it is the idea her Sun & Sound Detroit imprint is built on. The label recently put out its debut vinyl only various artists release ‘EASE’, a record framed as a vinyl conversation between the house heritage of Detroit and Chicago. Deep house, jazz roots and forward looking soul run through it, with Glenn Underground, Coflo, Jon Dixon, Kevin Reynolds and Carmen herself representing a genuinely cross generational cast.

Her latest release keeps that spirit going. ‘Wait For You’ pairs Carmen with fellow Detroit artist Ryan Sadorus for a bouncy dancefloor heater on Sun & Sound Detroit, built around a warm rolling groove, playful bass movement and Carmen’s expressive vocal hook. Lyrically it sits in the space between longing and connection, a story about patience, desire and the quiet hope that love will eventually meet you halfway. The chemistry between the two is obvious, and it lands as one of the most immediate things the label has released so far.
