Tomorrow, MUTEK Montréal returns for its 27th edition, bringing six days of electronic music, audiovisual experimentation, and boundary-pushing performances to the city. From August 25–30, nearly 120 artists from 28 countries will take over venues across Montréal, with a programme that moves freely between the dance floor, concert hall, public space, and everything in between.
Under this year’s theme, ‘Amplify & Resonate,’ MUTEK once again looks beyond the conventional festival format. Sound, technology, visuals, and physical space all come into play, with live performances, immersive audiovisual works, and hybrid projects sitting alongside more dance-focused programming. It’s a lineup built for discovery as much as familiarity; the kind where you might head out to see one artist and leave having discovered three more.
One of this year’s most exciting developments is MUTEK’s return to Maison symphonique for the first time since 2013. Taking place from August 27–29, the new X/Visions series brings experimental electronics and contemporary composition into one of Montréal’s most striking listening spaces, with performances from Kara-Lis Coverdale, Kali Malone, Tristan Perich, James McVinnie, Voices From The Lake, Ah! Kosmos, Hainbach and Fennesz with Lillevan.
The programme offers a particularly interesting meeting of worlds. Pipe organ, minimalist composition, 1-bit synthesis, analog electronics, and ambient techno all find a place under the same roof, while Voices From The Lake bring their hypnotic sound into the concert-hall setting and Fennesz and Lillevan mark the 25th anniversary of Endless Summer with an audiovisual performance.
Of course, MUTEK isn’t all about sitting back and taking it in. Across the week, the festival’s programme also heads into darker rooms and later hours, with artists including Jeff Mills, Ben UFO, Rival Consoles, JakoJako, Matthew Herbert and Polygonia among the names appearing across the city. From hypnotic techno and adventurous club sounds to leftfield electronics and live experimentation, the programme offers plenty of routes in…although, as always with MUTEK, getting a little lost in the process is part of the fun.
The festival’s free Expérience series at Esplanade Tranquille adds another dimension. Running throughout the week, the outdoor programme brings performances from artists including Ida Toninato, Pick a Piper, Barker, Zora Jones and NVST into the heart of downtown, making it easy to dip into the MUTEK universe without necessarily planning your entire week around it.
And that’s really where MUTEK shines. There is no single way to experience the festival. One night might mean an immersive audiovisual performance; another, a live set in a concert hall, a late-night dance floor or an unexpected discovery at an outdoor show. Across six days, the boundaries between electronic music, contemporary art, and technology become increasingly blurred – often in ways that are best experienced rather than explained.
As Montréal heads into the final stretch of summer, MUTEK is ready to once again turn the city into a playground for sound and ideas. Whether you’re coming armed with a carefully mapped-out schedule or simply following your curiosity from one venue to the next, there’s plenty waiting to resonate.
