Some records earn their emotion slowly, and ‘Songstar’ is one of them. It arrives as the opening statement of Mercurio’s new ‘Songstar EP’ on Last Night On Earth, and it pairs the Argentine producer with the label’s founder Sasha for a collaboration that feels like it has been years in the making.
Mercurio has spent a quarter of a century shaping the more melodic end of the house and techno spectrum. He is a DJ, a live act and a trained musician who plays guitar, and that musicianship is audible in the way his arrangements breathe rather than simply build. His work has landed on many of the scene’s most influential imprints, from The Soundgarden to Watergate, and he has collaborated frequently with countryman Hernán Cattáneo, including the ‘2009 EP’ that the pair delivered for this very label in 2025. Returning with a three track solo outing, and with the label boss alongside him on the opener, marks a real moment in that long run.
‘Songstar’ is a driving cut laced with synth ripples and cosmic spirit, the kind of track where aching vocals melt into an uplifting groove and cocoon you in a warm, endless rush. Sasha’s fingerprints sit comfortably next to Mercurio’s, two producers who understand that restraint is what makes a peak land. The rest of the EP holds the same standard. ‘Sunday 960’ slows the tempo and sinks into an embracing groove, its celestial synth glow and tender atmosphere reassuring and empowering, while closing cut ‘Polymode’ carries a darker undercurrent, brooding bass consuming you from below as flickering melodies and smeared vocals awaken your every sense.
Last Night On Earth has been Sasha’s own creative home since 2013, a platform he built to document the sound he plays rather than chase whatever the moment demands. Over the years it has become a trusted stop for deep, emotive and forward looking electronic music, championing established names and newer voices alike. Handing the opening track of this EP to a collaboration with Mercurio says plenty about the regard the label holds him in.
