Bristol producer dubspeeka needs little introduction. His scintillating techno weapons have shone on the likes of Adam Beyer’s Drumcode and Sasha’s Last Night On Earth, while more recently setting down a marker with his top notch remix of Tronic music boss Christian Smith’s ‘Price Of Freedom’. September 19th, sees the UK-based producer take a step away from his go-to, straight up four-to-the-floor power perspective as he delivers a refreshing new LP titled Population 50201. This week, we chatted release balance, thought process and lots more, while dubspeeka treats us to a full premiere of ‘K346’.

WWD: You’ve had an impressive run of EPs this year, with labels like Sasha’s Last Night On Earth and Drumcode Limited not to mention on via own imprint Skeleton. Do you think it’s important to keep a balance between releasing music on labels outside of your own?

Sure, I primarily started Skeleton for my own productions and from there started to release on other selected labels, but with Skeleton I have the freedom to really do whatever I want, and to also release music from artists that I like.

WWD: Your album is a collection of tracks that showcase your diversity in production, and not necessarily for the clubs – was there a different thought process behind some of the tracks that went towards ‘Population 50201’?

These tracks that I’ve chosen have built up over the last couple of years I suppose. When I’m producing I don’t always go for tracks that I’d necessarily play in my sets, but more of what I listen to when I’m relaxing at home, both of these are really important to me musically as a producer, so yeah, these tracks represent both sides.

WWD: It definitely carries the trademark dubspeeka sound – is there any studio kit that you find you couldn’t live without?

My studio ears!!! Whatever piece of kit I’m using I always dig to get what turns me on, and it’s my ears that tell me that. But I love playing with new kit, its like a drug for me, I get really excited when I’ve ordered something new and when it arrives its like Christmas opening a new present!!

WWD: Would you say there’s any particular artists past or present, that have influenced the direction of the album heavily?

From my music library, I always find myself going back to albums that have have stood the test of time for me. Massive Attack, Aphex Twin, Burial, Autechre, Portishead, Radiohead, The Cure, Phillip Glass, Boards Of Canada are some of the artists that have produced some of these classics.

WWD: We hear you have some more remixes in the pipeline for Last Night On Earth towards the end of the year. Any other forthcoming releases you’d like to tell us about?

I’ve just finished a remix for Ejeca for Last Night On Earth, and a new project I’ve set up which will have its first release in Jan 2017 which I’m really excited about 😉

Dubspeeka – ‘Population 50201’ (Skel059) is set for release September 19th, 2016.
