Kölsch – Speicher 75 EP

Looking through some of Kölsch’s (AKA Rune RK) most recent productions, you’d be forgiven for thinking he’d adopted a new trajectory for his style, diverting away from his simple yet mesmerising house trademark towards a sound distinctly erring on the electro side. His latest release, however, bears all the semblance of the tracks which have brought him much acclaim in the last 3 years.

The latest EP in Kompakt’s extremely reputable Speicher project features Kölsch for his third such appearance, and he’s delivered the goods again. His talent for gently building a track bit-by-bit without losing interest is perfectly expressed in the first tune, Goldfisch. Each element, despite being unspectacular on its own, comes together perfectly to create an inspired symphonic unison. From the straight-forward four-note melody to the background clicking to the simple drum line, Kölsch sticks to his guns and gets results without over-complicating.

The second track, Zig, differs from the first immensely while maintaining the allure of Kölsch’s distinctive sound. Zig, which follows on in the style of Der Alte (played regularly by the likes of Bicep, Todd Terje and a host of Ibiza’s finest), is a very impressive track, permeated by a really positive 80s vibe. With a minimalistic tapping percussion and disco chords punctuating throughout, this one’s got a feel-good buzz to it and will no doubt feature on a few DJ’s go-to lists in the coming months.
