Sola Nauts show no signs of slowing down with a huge three track EP from tech-house main-stay, Demuir, called the Legend EP. Opening the EP is the title track ‘Legend‘, a swelling house cut developed with reverberating syths, a song that would perfectly soundtrack any sunset. Second up is ’How Do I Ask’, which presents a much darker vibe with a mind-bending rhythm and pulsating drums built with the early hours in mind. Rounding off the release in a suitably wonky manner that it’s name suggests, is ’Shroom Trippin’, a heavy acid-tinged track with a pulsating beat made for a dark and moody peak-time warehouse.

“The Legend EP on Sola Nauts is me stepping outside the limitation of predictable music and forging ahead to what is a new and unabashed sound that is black and mine” – Demuir

Demuir’s eclectic house sound exudes funky, sexy and soulful beats that are consistently recognized and sought by fellow artists and dance music fans around the world. Hailing from Toronto, Canada, Demuir first fell in love with house music after hearing Derrick May’s ‘Strings of Life‘, and by seeing May, DJ Sneak, and Mark Farina at Industry, the legendary Toronto nightclub. With remixes for Elrow and A-Trak’s label Fools Gold, a highly successful EP on Hot Creations and additional EP’s on Desolat, Origins and Heist, Demuir made sure to spread his music globally. His musical output has truly led him to stand out amongst his peers and be championed by dance music’s elite artists. Not to be outdone by his skills in the studio, Demuir is equally impressive as a live performer with a track record of prolific DJ sets. In 2019 his booking schedule took him to play shows for Elrow in Barcelona & Miami, Paradise @ Art Basel/Miami, Coda/Toronto, Halcyon/SF and House of Yes/NYC + tours in Australia, Europe, Asia and South America.

WWD: Hey Demuir! A year since we last spoke! How are you doing? How have things been since then?

Time flies! I’m good and staying creative and grateful that I can continue doing this full time.  I think it goes without saying too much that a lot of things have changed in our industry with the pandemic happening.

WWD: So obviously the global circumstances are considerably different since we last spoke. Back then you were touring heavily but now unfortunately that isn’t possible at the moment. What are you doing with your time at the moment?

I was traveling quite extensively prior to March with many gigs that were scheduled in the year.  The COVID-19 pandemic has allowed me to refocus and connect to things I didn’t previously have time for.  The music was always a constant, but I’ve been able to grow my YouTube channel substantially as we post 2 videos a week and we also setup my Patreon page to connect directly with fans, which has been great.  I also found time to create a sample pack for Loopmasters (out in December 2020) and a comprehensive production course available through my Patreon along with exclusive music and weekly production streams.  I’m very proud of what we have been able to accomplish.

This time has enabled me to rethink my brand model and how I want to engage the industry going forward and it’s turned out to be great!

WWD: You’re set to release your Legend EP on Sola Nauts very soon. (November 6th) What can we expect to hear from it?

This EP outlines my range as a producer with tracks touching on Jacking House / House, Tech House, and Techno.  It’s fitting because I want my legacy to capture the fact I’ve been able to produce music in each of these genres with a true underground aesthetic.

WWD: When we last spoke you mentioned you’d been loving the Arturia Minibrute. How have your studio sessions been recently and what bits of kit have you been enjoying?

It’s a brilliant piece of kit!  I used it to create the bassline on “Soul Muzak” that come out on Darius Syrrosian’s Moxy Muzik label. I’ve also used it on this ep on “How Do I Ask” Since then, Arturia has offered 2 additional presets offering more sounds.  Great value from that little thing.

WWD: If you could offer one piece of advice to an aspiring artist, what would it be?

It may sound cliche, but my advice is for artists to just be themselves and don’t feel

compelled to have your music or sets sound like somebody else.  There are 7 Billion

people on the planet and we are interested in discovering what is uniquely you.

WWD: You’re well known for your ability to nail a wide range of styles within the realms of house music. Do you go into the studio knowing which style you want to write or does it just happen naturally?

Great question!  Everything, creatively, is a feeling for me and I leave myself open to the serendipitous aspects of creativity.  This is as natural as one can get.

WWD: With the current circumstances, it is important to take the time to relax when you can. What piece of music helps you relax in your downtime?

I’m not the best person to talk about rest.  LOL.  However,  I do see its’ value.  I grew up with a Father who was classically trained in music, so I find myself listening to that a lot in my downtime.

WWD: It was great to catch up again with you Demuir! We wish you all the best till the next time we speak. To round things off, is there anything else from yourself that we should be keeping an eye out for?

Thank you for the chat!

Musicwise, I’m happy to advise of EPs I have coming to Elrow, Rawthentic, Sola, Edible, and Kultur with a huge remix I did for Cassius!  Also finally getting the chance to launch the vinyl side of my Purveyor Underground label which is exciting for me.

Aside from this, there is always something happening on my YouTube and Patreon channels that I encourage people to tap into.  For Patreon, we are announcing an “Elite” tier that gives aspiring producers full access to my course and Patreon along with 2 to 3 hours of mentoring from me directly.  More details on that November 13th.  Additionally, I have a Discord page setup which is a community where aspiring DJs / Producers all connect in support of their growth in the electronic music community.
