Coming up in the warm streets and long nights of Curitiba, guided by the voices of the Hip Hop culture.
Immediately appealing for the way it took cues from history but looked to the future, the brazilllian HNQO found favour with people at influential labels like Hot Creations, Defected, OFF Recordings, SlothBoogie and lead to some key EPs that were fresh, warm and full of genuine feelings as well as his full album released on Kompakt’s brazillian sub label D.O.C that connected with people on a deeper level, followed by shows at festivals like Time Warp, DGTL, Rock In Rio, Apenkooi and some important clubs over more than 30 countries. HNQO continues to bring his touch with a real sense of soul, funk and fun as well as displaying some assured studio skills, riddled with a charming energy that is buoyant, underground and appealing.

Off the back of his latest EP, WWD we sit down with HNQO as he talks us through the release track by track. He tells us “‘No Punk’ is a three track EP that brings vibes from different moments on my production timeline.”

The Brazilian starts us off with the EP’s title track… A late night burner layered with low slung and driving grooves punctuated by echoed synth stabs, filtered brass, vocal samples and rolling basslines.

HNQO explains, ‘No Punk brings a classic feel with its repetitive bass, mixed with lofi melodic elements that I’ve been enjoying a lot lately. The drums are in your face, dry and punchy. I wanted it to fit the late hours of a long clubbing night.’

Next up is Non Verbal Comms that will test out your speaker’s low end to the limit. Get hypnotized by the thick bassline as it whomps its way into summer time melodies and floaty feel good vibes.

HNQO explains, ‘Non Verbal Comms features lofi textures and abuses the pentatonic scale for an uplifting, chilled but also groovy feeling. It kinda sounds like an underwater theme, suited for the summer time.’

Closing out the EP is the dark and moody ‘Trick’ with its hypnotic atmosphere, skipping hats, filtered rumblings and heads down hazy feelings, perfect for a smokey dancefloor.

HNQO elaborates “‘Trick was made in 2016 and its melodic elements were created with the Korg Minilogue synthesizer. After recording the sounds and arranging them into a finished track, it went through real tape and came back to the box with that beautiful texture. I wanted a simple yet effective bass driven track and the result was quite convincing to me at the time.”
