Continuing a strong fourth quarter, Phenomena presents Elias Erium’s ‘Groove Anomaly.’ Montreal based artist Elias Erium has been prolific and creative across the first three quarters of 2024. Phenomena has been the primary vehicle for the Canadian’s output, recording six originals across three EPs for the imprint, while also remixing ‘Neurotoxic’ by Joe Fisher for Buenos Aires based Rezongar Music. As 2024 now winds to a close, Elias has emerged from his studio with a new single ‘Groove Anomaly,’ a project which comes complete with four versions to satisfy a broad range of moods and dancefloors. With the ‘Expansion’ Mix serving as the project’s introductory single in October, Phenomena now unveils the full four-track release, complete with the Original, Liquid, and Ambient versions.

The cruising vibes of the ‘Original’ mix sets any preconceived ideas of Elias’ music alight, forecasting meditative propulsions and emotive chord changes. Continuing to depart from some of his previous experiments, Erium’s frosty percussive arrangements and techno-inspired beats make for a slow-burning build towards a tasteful apex of ravey motifs and elasticized synths. Drifting further away from the astral confines of melodic house and techno, Elias focuses on more of a timeless narrative across the ‘Expansion’ mix. Played out over eight far-reaching minutes, it’s a clever co-ax of tough compact beats, subversive grooves and percussive rides which paves a deliberate path into the main break. Here, Erium’s craftsmanship reveals itself, as skittering rhythms and glitched-out vocal edits eventually give way to billowing synth mutations and woody accents, before a tasteful build smoothly shifts energy into a charged finale.

Moving forward to the ‘Liquid’ mix, Elias flexes a different side of his studio repertoire with a drum and bass version to add further depth and character to the project. An impressive soundclash featuring grinning breakbeats, analog subs and sharp drums which capture the raw energy and innovation of this enduring genre. Rounding out the EP is the ‘Ambient’ mix, which puts a poignant stamp on this versatile collection. Instantly seductive, its laid-back beats and soulful phrasing sets the stage for a storyboard of indistinct vocal fragments, balmy swells, and meandering musical co-actions.

You can now listen to the full premiere of the original ‘Groove Anomaly,’ exclusively on When We Dip. Enjoy!
