Some producers spend years chasing a sound they can call their own. Ben Evers found his by loosening his grip and letting instinct lead. The Hamburg artist, who spent close to two decades as one half of Adana Twins before stepping out alone, has been quietly building a world of his own since launching Eternal Sunshine, and ‘The Magic Carpet Ride’ is the clearest picture of it yet.
Written in a single burst of inspiration, the track came together the way Ben likes to work best: follow the first idea, trust the feeling, keep moving. That looseness is audible from the opening bars. Swinging drums set a hip swaying pace, a grooving bassline carries the weight underneath, and playful synth lines flicker across the top with the kind of confidence that only arrives when nobody is overthinking anything. It is House music at its core, but the DNA of nineties Hip Hop, R&B and Dancehall runs right through the middle of it, giving the record a swagger most club tracks never bother reaching for.
It lands on the back of a very big year. ‘Chica’, his collaboration with fellow Hamburg producer Najeh, broke through internationally and pulled a far wider audience toward his name. Where that record opened the door, ‘The Magic Carpet Ride’ shows what is waiting behind it. Warm, playful and never taking itself too seriously, it is the one Ben himself points to when asked what he actually sounds like.
Eternal Sunshine has been the right home for this from day one. Conceived as Ben’s own creative playground, the imprint has welcomed remixes from the likes of Jex Opolis and Massimiliano Pagliara while holding to one simple philosophy: music made for the dancefloor, built around feeling, rhythm and the plain joy of making people move. ‘The Magic Carpet Ride’ fits that brief perfectly, and then some.
