Venezuelan producer Slaqk has spent the past few years quietly assembling one of the warmest palettes in organic house. Born Miguel Lessey, he arrived at dance music through lofi beatmaking and instrumental sketching, and that history still shapes the way he builds a record. Grooves are given room to breathe, textures are treated as melodies in their own right, and every element sounds placed by hand rather than dropped into a grid. Releases on clipp.art, Stereofox and Flug Lab have already carried that approach well beyond his home country, and his new EP for Magic Stories Records is his clearest statement of intent yet.

‘Paintings’ is the title track, and it lives up to the name. It opens with a soft, rolling low end and a shuffle that never pushes too hard, then slowly layers lush synth work over the top until the whole thing begins to glow. Slaqk lets the arrangement stretch out past the eight minute mark and trusts small gestures to do the heavy lifting: a chord that lingers a beat longer than expected, a percussive detail that slips in and out of the mix, a pad that swells just as the groove settles. It is music built for the hours on either side of peak time, equally at home on a late afternoon terrace or in the closing stretch of a night. Alongside it sits ‘Confessions’, a companion piece that leans a little deeper and confirms the direction Slaqk has been building towards across his recent work.

Magic Stories Records is a natural home for writing like this. Founded by producer Mazze, the label has spent the past few years gathering emotive, melody led electronic music from the likes of Mauro Masi, Peres, Modern Walking and Our Spaces, with a stated mission of leaving a lasting mark on the listener rather than simply filling a set. Slaqk fits that brief perfectly, and the Paintings EP feels like one of the label’s most complete outings to date.
