Some house records are built for peak time and some are built for the drive home. ‘You & I’ belongs firmly to the second group, a warm and unhurried cut made for golden hour, open windows and the last long nights of summer. Re.You and Bonader give the groove plenty of room to breathe, layering soft analogue textures underneath a piano line that feels like it has always been there, and the arrangement opens up gradually instead of forcing its way toward a peak. Paul Brenning sits right at the centre of it, his vocal intimate and quietly weathered, carrying the kind of lyric that keeps echoing long after the moment it describes has passed.
The single arrives as a standalone release on Younion, and it doubles as a statement of intent for both names on the label copy. There is an emotional openness here that plenty of summer house records reach for and miss, and it is the restraint in the production that makes it land. Nothing is oversold. The groove rolls, the piano answers, and the vocal does the rest.
Re.You needs little introduction for anyone who has followed underground house over the past decade and a half. Fifteen years of international releases, a run on Circoloco Radio and a catalogue that has always leaned as much on songwriting as on club function have made him one of the more dependable names in the field. ‘You & I’ also continues his long running creative partnership with Paul Brenning, whose voice has already shaped ‘Reasons To Love’, ‘Black Roads’ and ‘Touched You’, and whose delivery here is the reason the track lingers.
Bonader is the newer story. It is the house music project of German actor and entertainer Jimi Blue Ochsenknecht, and ‘You & I’ marks his debut under the alias. His stated motto, that house is a feeling rather than a genre, tells you plenty about the approach, and pairing that instinct with a producer as seasoned as Re.You gives the debut a footing that first releases rarely get.
Younion is Re.You’s own imprint, run under the banner ‘Re.You invites’, and across its catalogue it has hosted work from Rancido, Cosmo & Kramer, Dino Lenny, Aaaron, Ali Schwarz, Eins Tiefer and Florian Busse. The label has built its reputation on records that keep their emotional weight whatever the hour, and ‘You & I’ sits comfortably in that lineage.
