Dense & Pika – The Remixes [Grain & George Fitzgerald]

11 December 2015

Dense & Pika exploded onto the scene in the last two years with hard hitting bass line and emotional melodies. “Colt” has become one of their most lauded tracks. On this very special release as part of the hotflush remix series the reigns to two of their biggest tracks to date, “Colt” and “Airless” have been handed over to George Fitzgerald and Grain.

George was given free rein with “Colt” and unusually for him he seems to have taken some of the heavy weight out of the track. Making this techno thumper into a more soulful house track that gives me a modern day Kerri Chandler feeling. By taking out some of the heavy weight in the track he has discreetly allowed it to become a much more soulful track that what it once was. Still retaining etchings of the techy kind of sound, but holding firmly onto the piano chords that shot this track to popularity just over two years ago.

Then there is the remix of “Airless” from the long standing alias Grain, also known as Artwork. His alias has made a powerful return with this remix. He has given the once subtle tribal drums a seat at the main table as they take the track in a more African jungle direction. He has given the track a little bit more heft behind it too. No harm either in my opinion. Grain has also given the track a faster tempo as well. No harm at all when trying to slot it in with a blistering techno set. A perfect example of remix’s executed to a tee.

Two fucking powerful remix’s of two already standout tracks. For me Mr. Fitzgerald’s effort takes top spot, but only by a nose. I can see both of these becoming regular residents in a lot of peoples dj sets.
