WWD 073 welcomes Montreal native Gab Rhome. The Canadian producer/dj has long treated our ears to sonic bliss with records on the likes of Anjunadeep, All Day I Dream and Kindisch and we’re very excited to finally receive him in our central mix and interview series. Our chat touches on the renowned penchant for a bowtie, a burgeoning production schedule and the upcoming Anjunadeep tour in North America.

WWD: Thanks for taking the time to chat Gab!

How are you doing today?

Pretty good, pretty, pretty, pretttttty good!

WWD: Your love of bowties is well known. How essential is the perfect bowtie to an effective outfit?

Would you have a martini without the olive?

WWD: Tell us about your most recent purchase – where, when and why?

I found a gold mine in Florence. There was actual gold in there but some wooled bowties also. Acquiring tailored clothes in Italy is truly an experience. Always look Italian when you can.

WWD: Getting down to business. You’ve been busy recently working on a remix for Akbal Music, a remix for Atish and Mark Slee’s Manjumasi imprint and a follow up release on Kindisch. Is it safe to say you’re feeling inspired right now?

There’s definitely something going on. Summer was good on the soul and now the crisp autumn air in NY keeps me away from laziness. I’m working on fusing a new genre into house music, which is a hard but healthy process.

WWD: It’s clear your talents are in huge demand. How have you found the transition from an emerging artist to a more established presence? how has it affected your use of time?

I still haven’t felt the transition, if it ever happened! I’m definitely spending more time in airplanes though, which can make studio time more rare and precious.

WWD: You have the Anjunadeep North American Tour coming up, it includes a stop in your home city Montreal. Are you looking forward to it?

Very much: this city holds a very special place in my heart.

WWD: In your opinion, is the city a good base for an artist to develop in or do bigger cities offer more opportunities?

I think it’s a good city for artists in general: the cost of living isn’t high, the city is young and there’s things happening, there is very good bookings in music venues, great museums to keep you inspired and the old port is simply beautiful. There’s a joie de vivre that’s hard to find anywhere else. Only downside is that you really have to travel out of the city to build a career.

WWD: You spent a period of the Summer in Ibiza. What did you take from the trip?

I don’t know but not a lot of sleep that’s for sure!

WWD: Outside of the aforementioned production work, have you got any other exciting projects on the horizon?

I’m very looking forward to this avocado toast. Also heading to a lot of new cities this month, including Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Dubai!

WWD: Before we close out, can you give us an insight into the mix you’ve provided for us today?

I’d say it really represents how I play but with a nicer intro and outro haha. Most of my previous podcasts were a bit more tamed down and I thought it’d be good to showcase the drums loving side of me.
