UUUU – the eagerly anticipated new long-player from Danish band WhoMadeWho – is out now via Embassy One.
A beautifully crafted record exploring myriad sonic palettes across a deftly considered offering of stirring vocal electronica cuts, UUUU is the band’s seventh full-length studio album since forming back in 2003 and marks another career-defining moment for three artists whose collective creativity and musicianship knows no constraint.
A truly captivating and emotive body of work spanning a remarkable scope of texture, tonality and timbre, the long player features a total of thirteen majestic vocal-led compositions, including the critically acclaimed album singles Mermaids, Summer, Silence & Secrets and UUUU with Rampa.
Accompanying these established favourites is an ethereal selection of brand new vocal offerings, including The Fall, Moon After Moon, Elsewhere ft. Kat Frankie), LIFE, Everyday with Rampa, Never Alone and 11-11 ft. AVA4K (amongst others), as WhoMadeWho take the listener on a mind-altering voyage through sound to bring us one of the most eagerly anticipated records of 2022 so far.
Steadfast in their quest to deliver extraordinary sensory experiences, WhoMadeWho continue to revel in the blurring of musical boundaries with this latest opus – reimagining their long-standing affinity for organic, instrument-led music within a uniquely electronic paradigm. Undulating across its sixty-three minute run-time, chugging down-tempo cuts sit handsomely alongside juxtaposed moments of reflective melancholy and rousing euphoria as modular soundscapes and stripped-back instrumentation bolster the hypnotic spirit of WhoMadeWho’s musical hallmark to conjure a thought-provoking journey that keeps the listener on their toes from the outset.
Speaking about the album, WhoMadeWho commented:
“UUUU means a lot to us. The album points towards new adventures both in the studio and playing live around the world. It’s very clean and yet very playful at the same time. Inspired by both 90’s and 00’s Electronica and 80’s Post-Disco, stylistically UUUU is still kept within our own Whomadewho indie-club frame. We worked with the producer Rampa from Keinemusik on the album. He pushed us at times when we were stuck, he changed multiple demos of ours that were heading for the trash and turned them into great songs. He also worked brilliantly, finding the core-essence of our extensive levels of creative inputs. Not an easy task, since we are often all over the place. UUUU is loaded with new colors. Kat Frankie joined us on several tracks, giving us an inspiring female counterpart. Also Frank Wiedeman, Jens Kuross, Davide Rossi, AVA4K and others helped us levitate. We have tried to make the album a voyage and a psychadelic trip to the best of our abilities. We hope you like it.”
In the years since their formation, WhoMadeWho have established themselves as one of the most important underground bands of their generation. The Danish group, consisting of Tomas Høffding, Tomas Barfod and Jeppe Kjellberg, has an exceptional sense of emotional depth, heartbreaking melodies and brilliant songwriting, boasting an expansive discography currently spanning a total of seven albums and a plethora of EPs, singles and remixes released on labels such as Kompakt, Innervisions and Life & Death. On the road, they are internationally renowned for their professionalism and outstanding live performances and have become regular fixtures at some of the world’s most notable musical festivals, including Roskilde, Sonar, Melt! and Burning Man to name just a few.
