After winning the 2025 German Jazz Award for ‘Album of the Year’ with ‘Love Avatar’, German drummer and producer Peter Gall could have simply repeated the formula. Instead, he returns to Compost Records with ‘Drum Seeds’, a bold solo album where raw beats, vintage analog synths and a deep jazz soul collide in fascinating ways.

Our pick from the album is ‘Glow’, the first teaser single and a true melancholic anchor within the record. Drums and percussion lock together in a hypnotic, almost mantra-like flow, while cascading electronic washes and a beautifully textured synth hymn slowly rise above the groove. It is a track that breathes, pulls you in and never lets go, proof that a simple groove can tell a whole story. Elsewhere on the album, ‘Core’ is another highlight, with a plaintive melody and rousing chords floating over a Dilla-inspired R&B groove.

‘Drum Seeds’ started as an idea from Compost boss Michael Reinboth, who had long dreamed of a pure drum album with Peter. Sessions at Jan Krause’s Beanfield studio produced hours of beats, grooves and layered percussion, but Peter’s love for vintage machines like the Juno-60, MS-20 and Prophet quickly pushed things further. Recorded entirely on his own over nearly two years, the 12 tracks travel from Krautrock and Afro polyrhythms to jungle, trip hop and club atmospheres, with nods to Aphex Twin, Caribou, Boards of Canada and the great jazz drummers Tony Williams, Jack DeJohnette and Elvin Jones.

Peter Gall has played on around 50 albums, and is also known as the drummer of the spiritual jazz collective WEB WEB. As for Compost Records, the Munich label founded by Michael Reinboth has been a reference for over three decades, bridging jazz, downtempo, house and forward thinking electronic music. ‘Drum Seeds’ is out now and best enjoyed from start to finish, ideally on vinyl.
