Long celebrated as one half of Scratch Massive, Maud Geffray has quietly carved out a distinct space of her own – one that leans deeper into cinematic textures, introspection, and dreamlike composition. With two solo albums already behind her and a growing body of work across film and club contexts, her evolution feels both natural and intentional.
Now returning with her ‘Flashes’ EP on Lumière Noire – including a collaboration with Chloé – Geffray continues to blur the lines between memory, atmosphere, and narrative. We caught up with her to talk about stepping into a solo identity, the story behind ‘Flashes,’ and how her worlds of film, studio, and stage continue to intersect.
WWD: Maud, you have been in music for many years as one half of Scratch Massive, how did your solo career come about?
I started out on my own because Sébastien, one half of Scratch Massive, lived in Los Angeles and I lived in Paris. So, one day I took the plunge because I wanted to refine my sound and create a distinct musical identity, as well as compose film soundtracks. It was the A&R director at Paneuropean Records who suggested I release some solo tracks, and his confidence in me gave me the push I needed to get started.
WWD: With two solo albums released already, how does your solo sound differ from that of when you produce and play as Scratch Massive?
Maybe my sound has a more intimate, dreamy quality to it; I focus less on kicks and bass, and more on dreamlike melodies and vocals processed like synths and effects, sometimes just to create atmospheres. It’s a different sound from Scratch Massive, which has a more effective approach to structure and a more synthwave-oriented sound, even though Scratch Massive clearly has that dreamlike quality as well.
WWD: Your forthcoming release on Lumiere Noire has a collab track ‘Flashes’ with CHLOÉ – have you collaborated before? How was the synergy between you?
What I appreciated about working with Chloé was the simplicity and fluidity of the process. With Scratch Massive, we had previously called on her to do vocals on our track “Closer” (from the album “Nuits de Reve”). So this is our second collaboration, but it’s very different. I had this track, “Flashes,” which I felt wasn’t finished. I suggested she add her touch, and she brought some very interesting elements to it, and transforming the track into what it is today—more minimal, longer, a new bass, etc ..which I really liked. I then added vocals after she had worked on it. The track was then complete.
WWD: Can you tell us about this release specifically? How can you describe the sound of it? It feels like more of a journey with a narrative, that individual tracks, was this something you consciously tried to achieve?
I had tracks that, in my opinion, didn’t fit into a longer, more structured album format. I wanted to release them as an EP because they all shared a common mood. Then their order, the track titles, the visual art direction of Dune, everything came together to create a rather personal journey, through time, dreamlike, sometimes more or less dark, hence FLASHES, like fragments of memories, a waking dream.
WWD: Do you prefer producing for films over music releases and DJ’ing?
The two worlds feed off each other. I really like to alternate because I am a big film buff and I love creating film music but it is commissioned music, the freedom of music without support remains a luxury, in short I love doing both, and DJing remains a release valve from the studio.
WWD: Finally, can you let us know where we can see you playing in the next few months?
