Some tracks are built for a single season. ‘Distant Memories’ has turned out to be something else entirely. Since Hernan Cattaneo and Hicky & Kalo first released it on Watergate Records in the spring of 2024, the collaboration has gathered 1.4 million plays, earned a nomination for Underground Dance Single of the Year at the 2025 Juno Awards and become a fixture in progressive house sets ever since. Now the trio returns to the Berlin label with ‘Distant Memories Remixes’, a three track package that invites Guy Mantzur & Chicola and Roy Rosenfeld to reshape the original, with the first version included alongside them for good measure.
Guy Mantzur & Chicola open the release and stay faithful to the progressive core of the track, but they stretch the frame around it. Their remix feels wider and more spacious than the original, with a stronger sense of lift that carries the melodies upward rather than simply holding them in place. At nearly eight minutes, it has room to build patiently, and the payoff is the kind of slow-burning release the two Israeli producers have made a trademark across their solo work and their joint outings, including the ‘Neon Bible’ EP on Sasha’s Last Night On Earth.
Roy Rosenfeld takes the opposite route. His remix pulls ‘Distant Memories’ a little deeper, trading the push toward a big peak for a softer groove and a more hypnotic flow. The melodies are given space to breathe, drifting in and out of focus over a bassline that never hurries, and the result sits comfortably in the warm, emotive territory the Tel Aviv producer has carved out on labels such as Lost & Found and All Day I Dream.
The original mix closes the package and anchors the whole thing. Hearing the three versions back to back makes the point of the release clear: the same central idea can be stretched, deepened and reframed, and still hold its emotional weight right across the progressive spectrum.
For Hernan Cattaneo, the release is another chapter in a career that has defined progressive house for more than two decades. The Argentine DJ and Sudbeat Music founder remains one of the most respected selectors in the genre, and his instinct for melody and patience is written all over ‘Distant Memories’. Hicky & Kalo, meanwhile, continue a remarkable run. The Montreal duo, both classically trained and residents at the city’s legendary Stereo nightclub, run their own Plaisirs Sonores Records and had already topped Beatport’s progressive house chart with Cattaneo on ‘Voyage’ before ‘Distant Memories’ took things to another level.
Watergate Records, founded in 2008 as the label arm of Berlin’s iconic club on the Spree, has long been a home for melodic and progressive sounds with real staying power, and this remix package fits neatly into that lineage. Three versions, one unforgettable melody, and plenty of reasons to keep ‘Distant Memories’ in the bag for a while yet.
